Baby New Year

Message from the Chairman

Happy New Year! I hope that all of you enjoyed your holidays and wish for you and your families a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2006.

I am looking forward to an exciting year for Stoneybrooke. I know I’ll enjoy seeing you at our neighborhood gatherings, working with you to spruce up our new barrier on Cold Spring Lane, and maybe even to further spruce up our entrance walls. Wouldn’t it be nice to turn the lights back on? We’ll see…

And whilst we enjoy our little enclave, I hope we continue to be a mouse that roars with continued involvement in local issues. South Kings Highway is quickly degrading to legendary status during rush hour, wouldn’t you say?

I’m glad too that we start our year with an active and mighty Neighborhood Watch program. During our December “car hopping” incident, Don Faxon was able to help several of you work through the process to report your incidents to the police. Final tally: 9 driveways visited, 11 vehicles opened, 1 laptop stolen, 1 CD case stolen, 0 arrests. All vehicles had been left unlocked by their owners. Police reaction: Lock your vehicles. A friend of mine’s reaction: Leave your vehicle unlocked so the perps don’t smash your windows (but don’t leave anything in your vehicle). Insurance company reaction: Good question, you might want to check your policy. After all, insurance companies rule, don’t they?

Thanks so much to the group of ladies (and husbands, TOO) who organized and pulled off a great Holiday party in early December. Santa was, as usual, on top of his game and MRS. Claus made an appearance this year, too. The most important part was the $200 Stoneybrooke residents donated to the Fairfax County Office of Partnership for their Adopt a Family program. Great idea, Barbara, and we hope the donations made a difference for someone. I think this ought to become a Stoneybrooke tradition with an even bigger number to donate next year.

And we already have our first schedule change of the year too. THAT didn’t take long, did it? Our March SCA meeting will be moved forward one day to Wednesday, March 15. The reason for the move is the Stone Mansion has been rented out on the 16th. Let’s hope there’s no live band, ‘eh? We will try for a repeat of our canceled December meeting with Fairfax Police Office Greg Kottemann presenting his identity theft seminar. The meeting will start @ 6:30.

Speaking of scheduling, I am in receipt of a letter from the principal at West Potomac High School, Rima Vesilind, inviting community members who have children rising to West Potomac in the coming years to a strategic planning meeting on Wednesday, January 18. Ms. Vesilind’s letter is reprinted in this issue of the Sentinel.

Do you have information to post in the Sentinel for all of Stoneybrooke and the world to see? Wedding pics, baby pics, graduation notices, reunions, news about former neighbors, etc., etc., etc.? Hey, wedding announcements in The Post will cost you as much as the wedding. We do it for free. Send it along and I’ll post it.

All for now,
Mike

Letter from the Principal of
West Potomac High School

Dear Members of the West Potomac Pyramid,

On this, our last school day in December, we send you greetings from the high school and wish you and your families a very happy winter break.

There is one event coming up soon after we all return to school in January that we wanted to highlight in your minds.  On January 18 at 7pm. in West Potomac High School’s Springbank Auditorium we are holding a Town Meeting to do some strategic planning and gather input from our community.  What do we want our high school to be like five or ten years from now?

This is our 20th year.  The school was opened in fall 1985 and we need to think about what opportunities we would like to see available for our students in the future.  Please bring your ideas and plan to join us.

Respectfully,
Rima Vesilind
Principal, West Potomac High School
