Just a
couple items for you this month.
Welcome
to our newest advertiser, Tina Falkenbury Photography. Check

Help Wanted
As many of you know, long-time Stoneybrooke residents Tom
& Carolyn
Collins are moving from Stoneybrooke. Tom & Carolyn are
moving north to
Pennsylvania to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren.
First, we want to wish Tom & Carolyn
the very best of luck and say
THANK YOU for all the work they did over the years for not
only
Stoneybrooke but also Lee District and the entire Route 1
corridor. Carolyn
worked for both Joe Alexander (Dana Kauffman's predecessor)
and Dana as
well. Tom served as a volunteer with the Southeast Fairfax
Development
Corporation for many years helping to revitalize Route 1.
Tom also served
as the Stoneybrooke representative to the Lee District Land
Use
Committee. THANK YOU, Tom & Carolyn, we will miss you
greatly!
As the Collins are leaving us, Tom's
position with the Lee District
Land Use Committee is now open. This was an extremely important
role as
Supervisor Kauffman uses the committee to guide his votes
on land use
issues. The committee is made up of reps from each citizen's/civic
association and HOA in the Lee District. Thus, it is a very
large committee
and frankly, quite powerful. We definitely need someone to
fill this
position. If you are interested, please contact me to discuss
it.
FALLING TREES AND LIMBS FROM NEIGHBORING
PROPERTIES
A Stoneybrooke resident recently had a very large limb snap
and fall off a tree that is on Woodstone common property.
The limb destroyed a wooden fence in the owner's back yard
and cost them quite a large sum of money to have removed.
We put the homeowners in touch with the Woodstone HOA management
company to alert them (Woodstone) to the problem and to attempt
to recoup their losses.
This situation applies, of course, to many, many homes in
Stoneybrooke. Many of you are bordered by Woodstone
common property, while others are bordered by Fairfax County
Park Authority property, Fairax County Schools property, Huntley
Meadows town homes, and Faith United Methodist Church property.
If you believe that there is a potential problem with trees
on property that borders yours, there are two actions you
should take to resolve the problem.
First, you should contact your homeowners insurance company
to determine what actions they believe you should take.
Follow their advice.
Second, it is your responsibility to alert the property owner
so that the tree issue can be resolved. Using maps
from the Fairfax County wesbite, I can pretty much figure
out whose property borders each property in Stoneybrooke.
Thus, if you feel you need to contact a property owner, contact
me and I can help you determine who borders your property
as well as where to send a letter to notify them.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
I recently met with our Neighborhood Watch Chair, Don Faxon,
to review the current state of our program. The program is
in good shape and Don remains excited to lead our need to
watch out for ourselves. As all good programs must though,
he is ready to “take it to the next level.” Thus,
Don is looking for five people to help him, one as an assistant
coordinator and four block captains to manage designated sections.
If you are interested, please contact Don at 703-660-6883
or at dfaxon@gmu.edu
All for now,
Mike

Message from
Supervisor Kauffman
Every five years, Fairfax County citizens
engage in an activity that directly affects future development
in their neighborhoods and their quality of life. We’ve
just completed this cycle, called the Area Plan Review (APR)
process, during which a special task force studied nominations
that were submitted to change the Comprehensive Plan.
To give you some background, the Comprehensive
Plan is required by state law and is used as a land use guide
in decision-making. It covers everything from public facilities
and future development to the environment. It is also a guide
for County staff and the public to use in the planning process.
The Lee District Land Use and Transportation
Advisory Committee Task Force (composed of members appointed
by their own civic and homeowner associations) reviewed 26
land use nominations that proposed construction of up to 715
new housing units in Lee District. The Task Force turned down
almost all the nominations, squashing the potential increase
for all but 11 new homes. I was pleased to support their recommendations
and at the September 11 Fairfax County Board of Supervisors
meeting, I moved approval of the Lee District citizen recommendations
for the 2006 Area Plan Review (APR) process.
While anyone can file a land use nomination,
typically these are filed by developers who want to increase
development density. As has been my practice since taking
office, I deferred all land use decisions to the citizen-led
Task Force. The 11 townhouses that were approved by the Task
Force would buffer an existing community from an adjacent
industrial park.
I commend the Task Force for recognizing
the serious transportation issues we face in Northern Virginia
and not wanting to further exacerbate the problem by approving
more housing units without the necessary road improvements
in hand or fully funded. The Task Force recommendations will
help to protect the integrity of our neighborhoods.
Land use in Virginia is a complicated
process. Often, people only see the relatively few development
cases that are approved. They have no idea how many development
proposals are denied before they get to the Planning Commission
or the Board of Supervisors.

Recognizing a Stroke
This is good information sent along by Stoneybrooke resident
Vic Perez:
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The
stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people
nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking
three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to
SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK
. to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is
sunny out today)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE
BOTH ARMS.
{NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this:
Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue... if the tongue
is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is
also an indication of a stroke}
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of
these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms
to the dispatcher.

Fairfax County Police Department
- Law Enforcement Explorer Post 1742
Annual Recruitment and Informational Meeting
Interested in a Career in Law Enforcement? Are you 14-20
years old?
The Fairfax County Law Enforcement Explorer Post 1742 is
open to Fairfax County young adults ages 14-20. The
program is sponsored by the Police Department as a service
to the residents of Fairfax County. Members receive
law enforcement training and citizenship and character education
while gaining experience in leadership roles. Exploring
is a youth led program with Police Officers serving as advisors
and facilitators for the program. The Post routinely
provides community service by assisting police officers
with crime prevention activities, fingerprinting and photographing
of children, police open houses and community events, as
well as distributing public information and wanted fliers.
Exploring is a great way for youth to prepare for their
chosen career field or help them decide if their interest
is strong enough to lead them into a law enforcement career.
Many active Fairfax County Police Officers were once Explorer
Scouts, and just as many former Explorers have gone on to
varied career fields building upon the skills gained through
the Explorer program. Every two years, the Post
participates in the national Explorer conference, regularly
bringing home top honors in various law enforcement competitions. The
Fairfax County Law Enforcement Explorer Post will host its
annual recruitment and informational meeting on October
16, 2006, beginning promptly at 7 p.m. and ending by 9 p.m.
at Police Headquarters, 4100 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax
Virginia. Interested young adults and parents are
invited to attend. No R.S.V.P is required. For
more information please call 703-246-4311.
